Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.
Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).
Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.
So what is changing?
Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.
Why are we doing this?
It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.
So what’s next?
Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.
Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.
Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.
Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

FACILIS DESCENSUS AVERNO. Shadowhunters (also known as NEPHILIM) are the appointed warriors on Earth of the Angel Raziel. They are appointed specifically to control and preside over the demons and supernatural creatures that reside in our world. The blood of the angel flows through their veins and while they appear as mere humans, they are far from such. Their primary objective from birth is to train and train, to one day join their breathern in the fight against demons and to rid the world of the evil that walks among humans.
Credited as the creator of the race known as SHADOWHUNTERS, the angel Raziel gifted them with items known as THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS to assist them in their war on evil, as well as the ability to create angelic runes. Among these gifts was an item known as the MORTAL CUP from which he had the first humans drink a mixture of his blood so that all shadowhunters, even those descended from the first shadowhunters, would have his blood running through their veins. This marked their family as shadowhunters all the way down their line.
Raziel gifted Jonathan Shadowhunter with tools that would be ideal in their battle against the demons that were invading the Earth. These tools were known as the MORTAL CUP (this is how Nephilim are created. The Cup itself is filled with angelic power, and drinking from it transforms a mundane into a Nephilim.), the MORTAL SWORD (a weapon that is kept in the Silent City and is normally only used by the Silent Brothers. Its main use is to force Nephilim to tell the complete truth.), and the MORTAL MIRROR (often referred to as the mortal glass, this instrument is known as Lake Lyn that exists in Idris; home country to Nephilim. Ingesting the waters of Lake Lyn is harmful to Nephilim; often leading them to have hallucinations and sometimes madness.).
Naturally already born with this ability, Shadowhunters refer to their ability of seeing through GLAMOUR as the Sight. Through training and the application of the VOYANCE rune, Shadowhunters are able to perfect their Sight to see through glamour and identify Downworlders effectively and immediately. Other temporary MARKS are given to enhance the Sight, but these marks fade away so that normal vision isn't destroyed in the long run.
RUNES, otherwise referred to as marks, are symbols that grant beings various supernatural abilities; both ANGELIC AND DEMONIC marks exist, with Shadowhunters using angelic marks. When it comes to Shadowhunters, runes are a COMPLEX LANGUAGE given to them by the Angel which grant them abilities beyond mundanes. Runes are burned into a shadowhunters' skin by using a stele, and are their most common tools in their fight against demons.
While runes do cause some uneasiness and a slight stinging pain, MOST runes do not actually cause harm against a Shadowhunter. When a young Shadowhunter is set to begin his or her formal training, usually around the age of ten or twelve, they receive their first rune; which is the Voyance rune most often. While most runes are meant to be used on Shadowhunters' skin, there are many runes that can also be applied on physical objects, giving a variety of effects and abilities. MANY of these runes are placed on their weapons to prevent demons from healing when injured by them; others are used to lock and unlock doors, create fires, and a WIDE array of other abilities. When drawn on the skin, fresh runes appear black; these runes will ALMOST always leave behind a faint white or silver scar as if as a reminder of the rune that was once placed there. These runes would need to be drawn again for their effects to be felt again. Other runes such as the Voyance rune and Parabatai, to name a few.
In this universe created by Cassandra Clare, MUNDANES are typically humans not of shadowhunter birth. They are COMPLETELY oblivious to the Shadow World, meaning Shadowhunters and Downworlders and other beings. When a Shadowhunter, warlock, or demons puts up a GLAMOUR; it is so a mundance cannot see them. Instead, they will see something compeltely different or nothing at all. A glamour CAN be dropped just as willingly as it is put up.
Supernatural beings and hybrid creatures who live in the SHADOWWORLD are typically referred to as Downworlders. This is term that widely covers those who are half human and half demon, basically; the opposite of Nephilim, which are half human and half angel. This term is used for WEREWOLVES, WARLOCKS, VAMPIRES, and FAERIES. Although demonic in origin and nature, Downworlders posesss human souls and are therefore considered part of the human race by those who reside in Heaven.
Peace negotiations signed between the Downworlders and the Clave are known as THE ACCORDS. The Accords act as >u>AMENDMENTS to the Covenant agreed to be taken as the law of the land by all of the Shadow World. The Accords are revised and signed every fifteen years by REPRESENTATIVES of the Nephilim and all Downworlder groups, in the Accords Hall in ALICANTE.
THE CLAVE is the COLLECTIVE name for the political body made up of all active Shadowhunters. The Clave keeps and interprets the Law, and makes decisions about the guidance of the Nephilim through history as it unfolds and decides on important matters that affect the Nephilim, which also SOMETIMES affect the Downworlders as well.
THE SILENT BROTHERS are a powerful group of male Shadowhunters who serve as archivists and medics of the Nephilim. To strengthen their minds, they have taken upon themselves the most powerful of runes known to Shadowhunters. They are feared among the Nephilim. They reside in the Silent City, away from the rest of their kind. The prospective Silent Brothers MUST sever ties to their mortal lives. Once sworn into the Brotherhood, they undergo a series of rituals that will turn them into Silent Brothers. They even choose a new name, SYMBOLIC of their new lives.
THE IRON SISTERS are a communal organization of female Shadowhunters that forge weapons for their kind. The Iron Sisters are considered the female counterparts of the Silent Brothers, albeit more secluded. They reside in the Adamant Citadel, where they live in almost total solitude and speak only, and occasionally, to female Shadowhunters. The Iron Sisters are even more private and removed from Nephilim society than the Silent Brothers. They do not like to be bothered and prefer to work in isolation, particularly not wanting interference from male Shadowhunters. The Iron Sisters rarely leave or venture outside of their usual domain, the Citadel, though they are also known to work in the basement levels of Alicante's Armory. Being remote, the Sisters have to rely on an accurate network of information to be aware of the happenings outside the Citadel.
